Reported Speech (1)

A. Perhatikan Contoh berikut :

Suatu saat Nana berkata, “Saya sakit.” Jika anda mau memberitahu orang lain apa yang dikatakan Nana, ada dua cara yang bisa digunakan;

• Kalimat Langsung : Nana berkata, “saya sakit”

• Kalimat Tak Langsung : Nana berkata bahwa dia sakit.

Dalam bahasa Inggris:

• Direct (langsung) : Nana said, “I am feeling ill.”

• Reported (Tak langsung) : Nana said that she was feeling ill.

B. Kata Kerja (Verb)

Ketika kita menggunakan kalimat tak langsung (Reported Speech), kata kerja utama biasanya berbentuk lampau / ‘past’ (Nana said that…/ I told her that… etc).

Anak kalimat biasanya juga berbentuk lampau.

• Nana said that she was feeling ill

• I told her that I didn’t keep her money.

Kita bisa menghilangkan kata ‘that’ :

• Nana said she was feeling ill.

• I told her I didn’t keep her money.

Secara umum, bentuk ‘present’ pada kalimat langsung berubah menjadi bentuk ‘past’ pada kalimat tak langsung.

am / is → was                     do/does → did

are → were                          have/has → had

will → would                       want/like/know/go etc → wanted/liked/knew/went etc

can → could

Perhatikan perubahan ‘verb’nya :

Anda bertemu Shasa. Kalian ngobrol. Apa yang Shasa katakan pada anda merupakan kalimat langsung (Direct Speech) :

• ‘My parents are very well’

• ‘I’m going to learn to drive’

• ‘Lita has worked in a small company’

• ‘I can’t attend Lisa’s party’

• ‘I don’t have any jobs’

• ‘I will visit Ana’

Beberapa saat kemudian anda bertemu dengan teman anda yang lain. Anda mengatakan apa yang telah dikatakan Shasa. Maka anda menggunakan kalimat tak langsung (Reported Speech) :

• Shasa said that her parents were very well

• She said that she was going to learn to drive

• She said that Lita had worked in a small company

• She said that she couldn’t attend Lisa’s party

• She said that she didn’t have any jobs

• She said that she would visit Ana

C. Bentuk kata kerja ‘Simple Past’ (did, saw, knew etc) biasanya tetap/tidak berubah pada kalimat tidak langsung (reported speech), namun bisa juga diubah menjadi bentuk ‘past perfect’ (had done, had seen, had know ect)

  • Direct         : Sylla said, “I woke up late”.
  • Reported  : Sylla said that she woke up late.     or Sylla said that she had woken up late.
